Thanks, Richard. This is a complex question. If you look at “This Week’s Bets” you’ll find that I never tip a horse that isn’t on top. I analyse 2000-2500 races per year but only bet on 200-250 of them.
When deciding which of the top horses to back I use a few guidelines. Other people using the Printout have different guidelines.
Some of my guidelines are as follows:
      1. Select Rating must be at least 20.
      2. If Select Rating is between 20 and 24, the horse must have won in achieving that rating.
      3. I prefer the prospective bet to be one of the best 2 horses in the race as shown by Best Rating column.
      4. I prefer Predicted Margin to be 4 or more. If it is less than 4 in front I’ll still consider it if it has achieved its Select Rating at the Course and/or Distance.
      5. If several horses are capable of beating the top horse if they show their best form (see Margin Best Form column) then I don’t bet.
When I decide to back a horse I always have the same amount on it regardless of odds. I don’t believe in chasing losses by betting on an ascending scale.
Hope this is of some help.
      Regards,
      JR
