No, as Richmond fans, I’m afraid the RhodenRacing family will barely know the Mornington races are on today. We might all contribute to a Sydney quaddie today to keep us all interested in between goals, so keep an eye out for that.
These tip are provided by JR’s son, MJR. JR has officially retired, but he has been kind enough to pass the racing formula one branch down the family tree. That doesn’t ensure these new tips will be successful, mind you.
The wide quaddie basically has more combinations than the narrow quaddie. More combinations means the quaddie is “easier” to get, but will either cost a bit more or will give you a smaller percentage of the return. If I have a wide quaddie, I’ll be throwing in a couple of value runners that I give a chance of winning their race. Crystal Dreamer was a perfect example of this yesterday. He was 40-1 by the time they jumped. I thought he’d run third, so I left him out of the narrow quaddie but threw him in the wide one.
MJIR
This is the only way I can find to reply to the scurrilous nonsense printed on the news page
Firstly JR has never in his life spent a single dollar on Easter eggs! All purchases of same were my domain and as I remember it, it was I who organised egg hunts AND Easter Bunny tracks etc. JR was far too busy with the form.
Also I am glad to let you know that I too have an auger and it is a great help in the garden. Mind you I had no idea you had any interest in gardening at all
Unless of course you meant “augurs” in your comment on Race 1 at Flemington 14/9.
Thanks John, your ratings were the key to my success. I have always appreciated that they were free and supplied religiously. If Tim Powell and Jame’s brother do streamline them, please let’s me know.
Enjoy your retirement.
Thanks again
Paul Hamilton
Ahoy John
Didn’t realise there was such a person as a retired punter!
Thanks for all your guidance dating back over 50 years !
As a final gift could you recommend a Preferred Melbourne analyst that we might follow?
Promise to call in soon.
Tony
Hi Tony,
That’s a difficult one. Champion Bets have a good stable of analysts. Mark Rhoden is their Sydney expert.
In my experience, Melbourne is the most difficult, and I’m not sure if Champion Bets have a Melbourne analyst.
I’ll check that out and let you know. Mark will probably know someone, even if they’re not connected to Champion Bets.
I’ll email you if I find someone.
Regards, JR
Adios John,
Thank you for the many years you have made my days at the races more enjoyable. Jim told me about the website, and I have to admit I shared it with a few of my friends who have also been keen followers of your ratings. After listening to your farewell song, I suspect i might even like your politics more than your ratings!
Well My Friend and cousin. The end of an era for us both. Both retired at the same time and both going out winners. I well remember our first foray to the track you driving us to the trots at the Showgrounds after Saturday afternoon cricket. Ah the beautiful memories. John your ratings for Sydney and Melbourne were a great help to me through my Bookmaking career. You were ahead of your time and back then With my own form coupled with the ratings I had a 100 metres start on the opposition.. Times change and now everyone has ratings at their fingertips. Mark has taken up the mantle and is very good ( Sydney only ) and Marty is dabbling in both Sydney / Melb ( promising ) but will they ever challenge the old man . John you were simply the best. Regards Paddy O’B.
Thank you for your kind words, Paddy.
It’s been a great life, hasn’t it? (Oops! That sounds like Bruce McAvaney).
“There’ll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty, before the last revolving year is through.”
Onwards and upwards!
John
Hi John, Just read your note about retiring. First thing I did was check it was not 1st April – sadly not. Congratulations on a fantastic career on the punt over many decades, an innovator before it became fashionable. You also adapted successfully to all the changes in racing over the years.
You have always been generous with your time and made your ratings available for all to use, a wonderful insight to your character. I know my Mum is devastated, “what will I do Saturday afternoon”, and my sister equally so. However they are very thankful to you.
I have always enjoyed working with you and understanding the ratings. Of course you may remember that you and James showed me how to use the database and I did Sydney races before you included them.
I know that I have been much more successful over the years and enjoyed the races more because of your ratings.
Now one last comment. It also occurred to me that this maybe because of what happened on Saturday night! Come on, just because some of us voted Liberal is no reason to take away our source of joy on Saturdays!
Good luck in the future. Thank you again. Lets keep in touch.
Good to hear from you, Michael. I’ve been finding it a strain to keep up the database recently. It’s very time consuming. If I go on holiday, then I have to catch up. We went to Europe for 3 months in 2000. It took another 3 months to catch up. For the last 19 years, the longest break I’ve had is 1 week. This is supposed to be a hobby!
Tim Powell, James’s brother, is currently working on a plan to streamline the calculations. We’ll see where that leads.
Kind regards, John
Thanks John, Not quite the definition of a hobby.
Please keep me in the loop as if there is anything I can do on a regular basis just let me know or they can contact me. Best Wishes, Mike Smith
Also, I was thinking that your database will stay relevant at least for a short time. You probably don’t wish / or can’t share it but I would love to have a crack at finding some winners based on your current racing statistics and runners as they stand today?
Hi Kristjan,
My database is in Paradox, which has been obsolete for at least 10 years. It should have collapsed long ago.
A friend is trying to convert it to something modern. If he succeeds, I’ll keep your request in mind.
For now, I’m afraid it’s no go.
Champion Bets have some excellent tipsters, one of whom is my son, Mark. But these tipsters cost money.
Kind regards, JR
They are based on the better of their last 2 runs, whatever the track conditions were for that run. If raceday conditions are different, then you have to make a decision on whether to back the horse or not.
I have been using your ratings and l have noticed that sometimes the maximum rating is different to the best course ratings does this effect the overall rating.
Thanks brad
I don’t do HK ratings. The vast majority of races are very even and involve mediocre horses. Results boil down to luck in running and skill of jockeys.
Someone else used to do them on this site but abandoned them pretty quickly
It means that it’s a very low rating. The ratings are quite arbitrary. When I started this about 30 years ago, I chose a rating in the thirties for the very good horses racing then. I never dreamed that I’d be rating horses more than 30 points lower than these good ones.
If one horse rates 30 and another is 35 lower than that, then its rating is -5.
The highest ratings on my scale were achieved by Might And Power in the Caulfield Cup and Black Caviar in the Newmarket. Both ran 44.
If I was starting again, I’d begin with ratings in the eighties. This would hopefully eliminate negatives.
Hi JR thanks for speaking to me other day at Caulfield.
Which is best indication for the best two horses>? Is it in listed order or by highest rating number
I note that within one race the 4th or 5th horses listed can sometimes have the higher “rating number” compared to the first horse listed.
Please clarify mate..
Could you please send me the rules for PLUS 4’s.
Cheers
Wes
Hi Wes,
To find the 2 best horses over the last 12 months, go to the BEST RATING column and find the two highest numbers. For example, in Race 5 at Warwick Farm tomorrow (Oct11), the 2 best horses are High Mist (25.7) and All From Scrap (19.7).
I’ll send you the PlusFour Rules by Email.
Regards, JR
Love this printout week in week out. Just some of the information to help give you knowledge when trying to pick a winner. I been using it for a long time now and has it gave me some joy.. 🙂
So I am just wondering when saturday’s form will be up?
Hi John, Genius. I just backed Supreme Effort at $14 the last winner in Sydney. Ratings have been on the money in 2016. Thanks again for all the effort. Mike Smith.
Hi John, Interesting reading the betting stats. Great effort to consistently finish in the black. I am not going to highlight the win % of turnover in case Paddy is reading, don’t want to start that debate again but will say most people would be very happy with last years return.Spring carnival is tough! Really appreciate you continuing to provide the ratings. They are a big help. Certainly the last few weeks has been a good run. Highlight of my week. Best Regards, Michael Smith
Hi, Michael. Good to hear that you are still using the ratings. I’m currently checking the last 6 or 7 years of printouts before providing some suggestions for Win Only punters as to which races to bet on and which to avoid. Regards, JR
Thanks John for keeping it going
I also use or refer to the ratings every meeting
I still never seem to be able to win at Flemington or on the big days but can say I have shown a small profit for the last 2 years
Please keep them going
Ahoy RR
Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year
Thanks for your help in the never ending war against poverty!
Special thanks for the long shot that nearly got up in the in the mile race last day of Flemington carnival
A big trifecta and just missed first 4
Hope to see you up fresh and running in New Year
Tony Grundy
Hi Tony,
Good to hear from you, Tony. RR struggling at moment – one of his new knees dislocated on Sunday – ambulance to hospital. Hard to get near keyboard with leg stuck straight out! This week’s form published with a good deal of pain. Hope to be able to continue after recovery.
Regards,
JR
Good on you John, I too heard John Faine on the ABC talking to the Nun, cannot remember her name, but it made me as mad as hell, what has happened to our freedom, the fool Dutton and the so called Border patrol, how pathetic, scaring the poor kids, and treating the Nuns with no respect at all, he is a slime of a person, and something needs to be done from within the ordinary people. If you are thinking of a petition, I will be very pleased to join you, in the mean time spend the weekend putting your good mind to the problem, and good luck
Hi John.
Appreciate your email listing the last 12 months to 31/1/15
As for the previous year, profit is increased slightly by limiting bets to the range 2.5 to 4.0 inclusive.
Without double checking, this gave 79 bets for a return of 91.4 units. Tough to miss the $16 wins though.
Brian L
Now there’s a blast from the past! I still quote your comment at the end of the 1963 exams: “I done pretty good in English!”
They were great days. It would be nice to catch up.
Did you just stumble on this website? It keeps me off the streets in my old age.
Kind regards,
JR
Just tried to telephone you but the call failed for some reason. Do you have a new number? My mobile is 04XXXXX893 or landline 94XXXX67 – you may have these numbers. Regards Damien L’Huillier
Thanks for your comments, Dave. When I started doing this as a hobby 30 years ago, I was working full time and only had time to do Melbourne Metrop. Later I added in provincial races worth the minimum city prize money or better. When I retired I added in Sydney, but that’s about my limit.
After a race meeting is completed, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to analyse the results and add them to the Database. To produce the printout takes about 1 hour per meeting. If I tried to do more than 2 States I’d never have time for anything else, so I’m afraid WA SA Q & TAS are out of the question!
Regards,
JR
Thanks Geoff. Glad you’re getting some enjoyment from it. There was a nice little First Four in the last at Sandown today that fitted the criteria.
Regards,
JR
Been reading your form since year 8 st Bedes college 1999.
Missing school Wednesday but tutoring at track was as good as any school day could be.
This site needs to start charging for form. Maybe below is a structure that’s fair and worthwhile. Still post results following day ..
Gold Membership – $120 per month dd
Silver Membership – $80 per month dd
Day Pass Gold – $55
Day Pass Best Bets – $35
* Gold allows everything free
* Silver gives best bets every meeting with suggested quaddie
* Day pass for those who don’t always bet
* Day pass best bets / quaddie could also be a pre recorded 1800 number
If start to cover Perth and Adelaide as we’ll, would be more valuable with bigger market. Any punter who spends over $80 week will pay the. 120 per month which roughly covers 70 races – so $1.50 per race!
We are all losing value with specials. By charging those who pay will increase margins and will just weed out those who have your site address. Amazing how many blokes walking round Flemington with your print out yesterday!!
Thanks for your feedback. By my calculations it was Year 8 1990 (not 1999)!
Perhaps you should become my Business Manager! Over the years I’ve done it for fun and have enjoyed the occasional positive comments. I’d be surprised if my calculations are affecting the odds all that much, but if you have evidence to the contrary I’d love to see it.
After more than 25 years of doing it for nothing it would be a bit hard to start charging now, especially in the week that Tom Hafey has died!
Kind regards,
JR
It looks impressive but it relies heavily on a few big dividends. Will those big payouts occur again? It will take a lot of patience enduring long runs of outs to find out!
Victorian TAB dividends were used in the research.
Hi John
I was rather hoping that the quaddies could also continue. I love to see the picks and always incorporate them into mine. Thanks again
Kind regards
Geoff martin
Are you going to have a quaddrella for Mornington on Saturday’s
Hi Brad,
No, as Richmond fans, I’m afraid the RhodenRacing family will barely know the Mornington races are on today. We might all contribute to a Sydney quaddie today to keep us all interested in between goals, so keep an eye out for that.
MJR

Thanks for all the winners John! Sad to see you go…..

Thanks, Kristjan. Hope your horse makes it to the Everest fit and well.
He’s an awesome sprinter, as good as Hay List in my opinion.
Thanks John! Very excited and hopeful! We thought it was a shoe in last year so hopefully conditions favour…

Will you be tipping in the Adelaide cup tomorrow
Just noticed your post. I only do Vic and NSW.
Wel done on tipping humidor at caufeild you are a true champion
Thanks, Brad.
It could certainly win on best form, but I doubted that it could produce its best over 1400m at Caulfield.
I think your ratings are fantastic have you ever thought about having a group of horses to follow like horses who impress you
I don’t have a list because often impressive horses find themselves racing against other impressive horses.
It’s best to take it a race at a time.
Welcome back l missed your tips the other week
Thanks, Brad. I was in the outback with no access to wifi.
Good to have you back John. We were lost without you last weekend. All the best.
Hi Mike,
Good to hear from you.
We had a great week in the outback. No internet for uploading when we needed it.
Hello John. Geoff from the races. Hope all is well mate
Hi Geoff,
Apart from finding myself in the outback with no wifi, all is well.
Back home now, so all systems go.
Are you covering Sunday races they’re are no ratings on your website
I only rate Sundays if there is a race worth $40000. there was one on 1st July but ratings were too low.
Can you please tell me if you will be rating Mondays racing being a public holiday
They are up now.
Good place get at Caulfield on Saturday 18\1. For a place well done keep up the good work
Thank you, Brad.
With your ratings are they for dry tracks or rain effected
They are based on the better of their last 2 runs, whatever the track conditions were for that run. If raceday conditions are different, then you have to make a decision on whether to back the horse or not.
What’s your tip for the Adelaide cup
I don’t tip. You need to work out what’s worth backing from the Printout.
Also I only do Vic & NSW.
I have been using your ratings and l have noticed that sometimes the maximum rating is different to the best course ratings does this effect the overall rating.
Thanks brad
No. The overall rating is not affected. Course and distance ratings are just there as indicators.
With your ratings some of them have astrious where the numbers should be what does this mean
It means a very low negative rating where a horse has failed to complete the course or finished many many lengths from the winner.
Do you do ratings for Hong kong
I don’t do HK ratings. The vast majority of races are very even and involve mediocre horses. Results boil down to luck in running and skill of jockeys.
Someone else used to do them on this site but abandoned them pretty quickly
What does the minus symbol next to the rating indicate
Will you be rating Caufield on boxing Day
They’ll be up Sunday night, though after yesterday at MV we should rest on our laurels and have the day off
Hi JR thanks for speaking to me other day at Caulfield.
Which is best indication for the best two horses>? Is it in listed order or by highest rating number

Hi Brad,
Generally the printout goes up on Tuesday for midweek meetings and Thursday for weekend meetings.
Hi John, Genius. I just backed Supreme Effort at $14 the last winner in Sydney. Ratings have been on the money in 2016. Thanks again for all the effort. Mike Smith.

Kind regards,
JR
Impressive to beat the exotics over such a period! Was this calculated on the vic tab dividend?
It looks impressive but it relies heavily on a few big dividends. Will those big payouts occur again? It will take a lot of patience enduring long runs of outs to find out!
Victorian TAB dividends were used in the research.
Please…please keep going as is, we all love your comments and ratings etc.,
Hi John
I was rather hoping that the quaddies could also continue. I love to see the picks and always incorporate them into mine. Thanks again
Kind regards
